Find a pair of pliers/wire snips. Cut off plug.

Take microwave to tip.

Buy new (to you) microwave oven.

There are too many risks involved in repairing this if you don't already know what you're doing.

I'm constantly amused/intrigued/interested in the way we (You Brits and us Yankees) use our language. I've heard it said that we are two countries separated by a common language.

For example: "Take microwave to tip" would be "Take microwave to dump" here in the US.

I had to ask someone to translate "fly tipping" for me some time ago. For the rest of you non-English English speakers, that's illegal dumping, or dumping on the fly.

I'm familiar with lorries, Limeys, petrol etc, but some of the more obscure sayings (to me) are a constant source of amusement.

I also have to keep reminding myself that you used the language before we did.

Doorman's right unplug it from the "mains" before cutting.

Cheers.

This makes sense to me now...it's called a "tipping fee" at our dump just to weigh in.

I never tip them.

I don't know that we know where your dump is.

It's normal for commercial and is usually based on a per-ton basis

Now, I'm curious. Anybody know the origin of the term?

Is it tipping, as in toppling over the side? Tipping the carrier so that the waste falls to the ground.

The origin isn't obvious when I search.

Please translate this into English.

"''Its will come on but no sign of heating''"

What will come on?

Thank you.

I'm inclined to agree with ER on this one. Microwave ovens are so cheap now that repairing one is not worth the bother.

Magnetron is dead. Microwave is now worthless. Replacement magnetron can run $60-$90, which is the cost of a brand new oven.

Recycle the Microwave, and buy a new one.

I also agree with English Rose. I would add one step, amending the suggestion to:

1) Unplug from the wall.
2) Find a pair of pliers/wire snips. Cut off plug.
3) Take microwave to tip.
4) Buy new (to you) microwave oven.

As has been said, they are as cheap as chips. The energy stored inside can REALLY be a nasty surprise.

Re: microwave

09/29/2011 5:50 PM

Loooong ago I repaired one of mine: burnt H.V. diode and defective magnetron; I had to install another magnetron of diferent dimensions, made a bracket for it, purchased the diode and had it working another couple of years; didn't really worth it.

I won't do that again; four months ago one of the operators, well known to all of us in the area, got killed fixing his oven at home; appeared on the news that night, we were all sorry the day after.

IF you want to continue, wich I don't recommend; unplug the device, conect a cable from ground (chassis first) to the shaft of a screwdriver and short out the H.V. capacitor terminals with it, afterwards leave a jumper across them and keep 'em grounded.

Replace the defective component.

Can be an open thermal cut-off switch.

Can be a defective relay, remove it and energize it making sure it closes it contacts.

Can be the High voltage transformer, check dielectric resitance between the windings and the core.

Check the H.V. diode.

If all of the above are OK, the culprit is your magnetron.

Make sure you wear dielectric or at least tennis shoes and keep a hand in your back pocket if you need to energize the thing; which hand? if you're left handed keep the right hand in your pocket.

Again, I don't recommend you to do this, but since I'm not there to tie you to a chair, at least try to be safe.

Oh, also have someone ready with a wooden stick to remove you from the live circuit if something goes wrong. Don't be drunk or under the effect of narcotics.

I still don't want you to try, so if you die nobody blames on me.

Please print this and keep it in your pocket the day of your... er, experience?

The best way to recycle an old microwave is to donate it to your local HV experimenter.

They can use the parts for an MOT (microwave oven transformer) powered Tesla Coil.

The coiler will usually responsibly recycle the rest.

Please read this thread...

http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/43963/sharp-microwave-oven

The links supplied are still active and may help you.

The are LETHAL voltages and currents inside microwave ovens. Only attempt repair if you understand the danger.

I've just replaced a microwave. £30 from the local supermarket. It's just not worth the time and effort!
