Bucket and Water Pressure

10/01/2011 12:29 PM

  • Given a Bucket 10" dia. x 24" long, solid back, ( no holes).
  • .50" holes spaced every 6" apart in both directions Linear and Circular
  • water being forced into and all around the bucket at 4 mph ( bucket is submerged)

Question:

Will the water inside (which is now swirling and in a washing machine type vortex), be sucked out through the .50" holes by the outside 4 mph current rushing past the sides of the bucket .....

OR

Will the 4 mph current keep ANY portion of the water from leaving the bucket through the holes by overwhelming the slack water trying to escape through the .50" holes?

* Yes i know having a big @$$ ol' hole at the rear and a screen over the hole would work better, but the customer insists he wants THIS configuration . It is producing nothing but turbulence and killing 75% of his Y.O.Y. fish due to stress and just plain beating the hell out of them in the vortex.

The hydraulic pressure caused by the velocity of the "bucket" moving through the water will force some water out through the holes. There will be some stagnate water below the lowest course of holes. Put a hole or two in the bottom, too.

In these YOY trawl designs , we ALWAYS cut out a 5"x5" square in the back of the bucket and glue and screw a swatch of 750µ Nitex. I also install a cone shaped baffle of 2mm PE raschel net to kill some of the incoming water flow and give the little critters a calm place to swim behind.

This guy did NOT want anything changed from what he had been doing since 1980's.

However, the new net I designed for him (that this bucket attaches to) increased his forward speed by 200% from his old Fred and Barney nets of yesteryear. He now catches a lot more Y.O.Y. fish but he kills more due to the turbulence.

I am going to try one more time to convince him with a sceintific approach that if he wants the added speed and added YOY catch, he will HAVE to let me modify the Codend Catch Bucket.

Thanks for the input.

I hate it when people tell me how to do my job, when I've been doing it for almost 30 years!

If this guy insists that he wants a rig that kills fish................give it to him.

If he wants to hire you to design a rig that gets the job done without killing fish, he needs to shut up and let you do it.

Sorry I couldn't help, but I felt obligated to say something.

I find with these type folks that when someone "higher" up wants to know why specimens that are supposed to be live , tagged and returned to the natural environment...... are now floating in formaldahide......I usually get a better reception on new ideas.

thank you for the comment.

How about one specimen of each design, thus showing which works best?

Already asked that. Waiting for an answer for a few weeks now.

This almost sounds like a political thread.

We know what the problems are and how to fix them.

They don't, and insist that what they're doing is right.
