ASME Sec VIII Div: 01-App-2-Reverse Flange

10/03/2011 4:47 AM

Dear Friends,

I have a pad type flange with tapped holes for screw. (bolting)

It has OD: 800mm ID:700mm & full face gasket from ID to OD.

Can I design the flange as integral type reverse flange with no provision of hub as per the diagram 2-13.1 in appendix 2?

I will be providing welding on the outside of the flange od as shown in figure UG-40 a-2. is it correct?

Appreciate help.
Regards

dear asd23789

Greeting to you

It is not allowable to designer - no way - to design flange from type (integral type) and neglect the hub. This means that the designer will neglect the calculations of hub stress in appendix. 2 in ASME sec VIII. The design in this case will be wrong design because he will not know if the hub stresses values meet the requirements of the code or not.

you must take care that the figure in appendix 2 (2-13-1) reverse flange (have hub).

Please make a quick review on the handbook (pressure vessel design) for E. Moss in part of (procedure 2-7 design of flanges).

remember if you neglect the hub in integral flange it will not becomes integral flange
