Skype and XP

10/04/2011 2:54 AM

Since their latest version (free skype) was installed, my computer refuses to cooperate. Tasks are being slow and even the typing does not follow on the screen. I need to do it word by word and wait seconds to have it appear.

Has someone of you bright-ones the solution for this?

Now I can't really switch Skype on anymore. The computer becomes a hardheaded turtle while the CPU usage is under 7% average.

... helpful as usual. I wonder how long it took you to find this? My bet is, not too long.

I have to say, I think it happens too frequently that people needing help with problems don't take the time to do what you did for this individual. I do try to think before asking for help here, "Did I search the Net enough myself?," when trying to solve problems -- especially computer problems. The net is a virtual bible of information relating to almost any technological issue. Usually, somebody, somewhere, has seen "it" and posted about it. Just my 2 cents to encourage users to do their best to solve their problems by spending some time searching themselves before asking here.

(I know this sounds "preachy" but I don't mean it that way. I'm just asking us all to respect the time people here do take to help, but which we can usually do ourselves. A few minutes here, a few minutes there... it adds up.)

If I can do something in less than a minute, it's no big deal. Plus, I wasn't aware that skype actually used your bandwidth from your computer to route calls. So I learned something. That actually sounds a little intrusive. I'm sure the ISPs aren't happy about it.

It took me a while to understand how to do internet searches, and I still get hung up on certain inquiries. I think, (in at least some cases), it's not laziness. Just being overwhelmed by 75,000 hits on a simple question.

Good. But it doesn't hurt to remind us all to think and do before asking.

If you have empty memory slots, it might help to install more RAM.

It might help you to stop Skype from starting up with your computer in Skype's preferences, and then shut it down from the task bar.

Hi,

I am on XP and did not install the Skype updates as I was not confident they were from Skype. Thanks for your info I am glad I did not install them, maybe they were a scam? How can you be sure if they are genuine, presumably ask Skype themselves. Why not try this.
