Minimum Thicknesses Of Above Ground Storage Tank Plates

10/05/2011 5:39 PM

the minimum thicknesses of each part in above ground storage tank according to API 650 as followong:

- minimum thickness for first course in shell having inside diameter less than 60 m is 6 mm without corrosion allowance.

- minimum thickness for annular plate of bottom plates is 10 mm with corrosion allowance.

- it is not allowable - no way - for bottom plates thickness to be greater than annular plate thickness.

- minimum thickness for roof plate is 5 mm with corrosion allowance.

look out : in case of wrong designed thickness of shell for above ground storage tank, THE TANK SHALL BE BREAK DOWN

That's all right then. Is there meant to be a question in there somewhere?

Dear codemaster

when we say the minimum required thickness for any part of tank is .... mm , it does not mean that this thickness is safe thickness for any design conditions. But you must first calculate the thickness of each part according to the design conditions by using the equations in codes or standards which belong to each part.

the thichness which you get from the equation called ( minimum required thickness )

then you add corrosion allowance to the minimum required thickness, then you select the final thickness which called the nominal thickness.

After all that if the nominal thickness is less than minimum required thickness in code you must specify the thickness in code.

these rules must be followed in all calculations of thicknesses for all static equipment.

for pressure vessel check ASME sec VIII UG. 16

for above ground storage tanks check API 650 section 3 ( design section )

for air cooler headers thickness check API 661 table 1 + ASME UG. 16 + TEMA standard class R.

for heat exchangers (shell thickness) check TEMA standard class R. table RCB 3-13

BUT for piping thickness calculations it will be different. That you must flow the rules in ASME B31.1 ( for power piping ) and ASME B.31.3 ( FOR PRTROLEUM SECVICES)

Hello blackpanic73

That's fine, many design procedures are covered by codes, but are you asking a question, or trying to educate cr4 readers? If the latter, why this subject at this time?

dear codemaster

greeting to you

do you mind if you suggest a certain topic or a certain problem in the field of static equipment , piping, pipe lines or material selection to talk to gether about it to profit the informations between us. THIS GOOD WAY FOR ME TO LEARN AND KNOW MORE.

You've already mentioned a few topics. Why not ask a question or say something to open a discuss about one of them? They sound like your area of interest.
