2003 Honda Pilot Problem

10/09/2011 2:29 PM

I have a 2003 honda pilot and I am having trouble diagnosing the problem. The problem I am having is when I am driving down the road the car will cut out for a few seconds, almost like I turned the key off, it doesn't shut all the way off but at night the lights will go out for a second, the radio will cut off, and when it comes back on, about a second later, the instrument lights light up like they do when you first start the car. I believe that it has something to do with either my key or possibly fuse or relay. I am curious if anyone has had this problem and if so can they give me some advice on what to do.

I'd not wait for this to cause a wreck. What happens if, at night, it doesn't come back on? How would you explain it to the investigating officer, or your insurance company? Not to mention any innocent bystanders you might run over.

The only advice I will give you is to take it to a shop, now.

Thank you for your concern I ha,ve not been driving at night lately it only took 1 time to scare me into parking it now I am just trying to determine if it is something that I could possibly handle fixing or if I have to wait until I can afford to put it in the shop. Again Thanxs for your concern

Good, I'm glad that you aren't playing headlight roulette.

You might try some of these:

  1. Honda Pilot - Honda Pilot Forums - Piloteers.org
  2. Honda Pilot - Honda Pilot Fora Forum
  3. Honda Pilot Forums & Discussions - Car Forums - Edmunds

It does sound like a relay tripping, but you'll just have to test them, I guess.

Welcome to the forum. You can read and spell. You are qualified to be a member.

Don't mind the oddballs who can't spell and believe that they have discovered how to make cars run on water.

Cheers.

check the fuel pressure, or are you only having this problem when the engine's hot? if so, look for vapor lock issues. metal fuel lines must be clear of heat souces.

Fuel injected vehicles don't suffer from vapor lock.

Vapor lock was caused by block mounted, mechanical fuel pumps sucking fuel from the fuel tank to the engine.

Fuel pumps are now mounted in the fuel tank and push the gas to the injectors. They produce pressures that don't allow "vapor lock".

Check all hot wires too, while your at it! On the serious note, have you noticed this only at night, while the head lights are on, or does this also happen during the day without the head lights being on? I take it that it's not throwing any codes, turning on a service or check engine light?

Sounds like a computer control problem to me, I had a Holden Camira (GM/Opel) wagon that used to shut down for no reason, then start up again for no reason as well. It turned out to be a faulty computer chip.

Reading out computer codes, even buying a device to do that is cheap insurance. Checking ALL chassis grounds, redoing them after cleaning with vaseline or dielectric compound. Checking connectors for corrosion. If the car ever saw water in the inside, it is bad. If it was saltwater I shudder.

Drudgery, I know. But, you are cheapest labor around, properly motivated. After all, it is your behind on the line.

Lets look a little closer. Do your headlights go off when you turn the ignition off? If so, it sounds like an interruption of power in the run position.

If the headlights stay on with the key off, the looking is going to be in a lot more places.

When the lights go out, is it the instrument illumination lights also, or just the headlights?

If I were you, I would let the car idle with the headlights on, shining on a light colored wall or fence. Then open the hood and start with the battery, and try moving the ground cable, then the other end of it IF SAFE. Next try the positive cable. The starter end will be difficult to get your hands on, but just pull and push the cable, and watch for the lights. There should be a lead from the positive post of the battery to power everything except the starter. Try to follow that wire. It can be on the battery (common location) or at the starter motor main lug. The third option is to connect the battery to the alternator, and feed the remainder of the car from that post, so check there.

BTW, welcome to the insanity.
