How Do I Size a Water Header for 7 Units of Sand Filters

10/14/2011 2:33 AM

Hi to every one. I am working on sizing the main water header for 7 units of sandfilters in parallel all working simultaneously for a given flowrate of 360 m3/hr. The inlet and outlet pipe sizes of the sandfilters is 5" diameter with max capacity of 60 m3/hr each. Thank you very much

Actually, I cheated.

The flow capacity of a pipe varies as the 2.5 power of its diameter (per Darcy-Weisbach). Thus (7 x 52.5)0.4 ≈ 10.9 inches; the next size up is 12".

For a more refined answer, use the total 360 m3/hr flow (~1584 gpm) and some online program such as Pipe Calculator. Depending on how long the pipe is, and the acceptable pressure drop, 10" might also do.
