Fire Alarm Detectors

10/14/2011 10:46 AM

Hello,

I just need to ask please if it is required by NFPA 72 to install detectors in car parks knowing that these areas comprise sprinklers.

Thanks.

I'm not sure why a "car park" would be equipped with sprinklers unless it is a "parking garage" within a normally occupied building.

First Check IBC (International Building Code) to properly classify the occupancy of the building and IFC (International Fire Code) to determine the specific fire alarm requirements for the facility. NFPA 72 only provides requirments of proper fire alarm system installation and does not provide any determination whether a facility requires manual or automatic fire alarm protection.

If this is a parking garage and the occupancy of the building requires an automatic fire alarm system, then the parking garage is likely to require automatic fire detection, but this also may be dependent on the particular fire separation between the parking garage and the occupied areas of the building. The dectors probably should be heat detectors, rather than smoke detectors because the latter could cause nuisance alarms given the fumes and dust they would be subject to.

I don't know what NFPA says. But local authority insists Fire Detectors along with sprinklers.
