EOT Cranes Power Lines

10/16/2011 4:24 AM

The power lines for EOT crane (the downshop leads) made from open steel angles are insulated from the building gantry using porcelain insulators. In a 3-phase, 4 wire system, are the neutral bus in the downshop leads installed without insulators? (connected directly to the steel gantry) ? Or the neutral bus also to be insulated from the building? what is the code of practice? The system neutral is solidly grounded at the transformer.

Eventhough the neutral is solidly grounded.. Neutral bus in the downshop lead should not be connected directly to the steel structure.

You will find if you look the grounded neutral is NOT neutral. It is your earthing conductor.

If you're using this as a neutral return then:
a/ you want shooting!
b/ you're incompetent!

Cranes usually have a ancillary transformer to provide a grounded earth neutral.

The "grounded neutral conductor" Is always insulated and never electrically connected to the structure/ground except at the first disconnecting means.

Thanks everyone! The doubt came only because if we don't have a ground bus, the earthing of the EOT crane body goes through the wheels and hence through the bearings. so is it better to use the 4th bus just as ground and don't use neutral in the cranes?

Use it as a ground. I've had numerous problems with relying on wheel grounding. It can damage bearings due to leakage current. One crane in particular we changed the bearings from phosphor bronze slippers to composite fibre. The guys on the shop floor were getting shocks off the hook! We changed one bearing back to the original phosphor bronze and thought the problem would go away. It didn't, dirt on the track was enough to allow a charge to build up on the main body of the crane.

Now a days you get protected bus bar systems even for higher capacity cranes. These are safer systems and require lesser maintenance. These systems are not suitable for steel plants where ambient temperature is high.

The installation of grounding conductors and neutral conductors is carefully defined in electrical regulations.

Hello everyone,

I've a doubt on this topic.. The answer which are given for the question are quite good.. But then

1)What are the necessary crane and trolley speeds?

2)what is the supply voltage/phases/amperage?

3) What is the control system desired?

Thanks in advance
