Plasma Display Distortion

10/16/2011 5:14 AM

I had bought a plasma tv from uae and had gifted to my friend in india. it worked fine for 3 months and after that there was a red vertical line appearing in the centre of the display screen. i wanna know what caused this? Is this a electrical or electronic problem? the tv repair guy had no idea on why it happened and now the TV has been replaced by the manufacturer based on the warranty but I never got a proper answer on what happened. So any of You guys incurred such problems can tell me what caused such problem.

tv brand-> Panasonic THP42X30M

I'm not too familiar with plasma displays, I'm more familiar with AMLCDs. If this were an AMLCD I'd say one of the transistors in a column driver has failed in the On position. I think plasma displays have a similar column driver/row driver type of operation, so it may be the same type of failure; a transistor in a column driver has failed.

I have an anecdotal possibility.

At a saloon that I frequent the televisions were upgraded recently. Plasma sets, I think. Within about six months there began to appear vertical lines on the screens of all but one set. The locations of these lines were not consistent from set to set and sort of wandered about, as opposed to a string-straight line.

Well, a discovery mission began, and it was determined that the lines in the screens very nearly matched the locations of the power cords behind the sets. The power cord of the set with no lines in the screen was not located behind, the set was located next to a receptacle.

I never heard if the power cords were truly the culprits, but the circumstances clearly indicate they might be.

that can also be a co-incidence. if you can gather any proof for this hypothesis it would be great.

Harry, I was hoping someone would come by and either debunk or reinforce my comment. As I said, I have no evidence to support my observation. Keep an eye on this thread, there may yet be a visitor who can comment further.

Best of luck in this, Doorman.

even i am hoping the same... i had even posted the same on electrical engineering group, but the admin thrashed it without even a little bit of remorse saying that it was a duplicate thread. so this is all i have left with. why cant the electrical engineers look at electronic threads since they are almost the same branch of engineering.....
