Transmitter Power Source

10/16/2011 3:49 PM

I need a power source for my transmitter.

It requires a 120 vac, single phase, 400 hz, 1500 to 2000 watts.

I could use an alternator driven by an engine or better yet, a ready available 120 volt, 60hz, engine-generator and convert this to 120vac, 400hz. Either way, it needs to be reasonably portable enough for men to carry into the hills for operation.

I do not know of a 120vac, 400hz, single phase, alternator of this wattage in existence.

You should look at buying a used aircraft static inverter, they're available and are 24VDC/ 120VAC 400Hz. Just be careful and not get locked on to a live wire @ 400Hz, it doesn't let go to easily.

You might have a look here for frequency converters too. There's a lot of different options for you to go.

Do you have a schemstic for this beast? Might consider: Change the power transformer and filter caps and run it on 60 hz. Issues will be finding the right transformer, or transfomers to do the job. They will be much bigger & need their own extrrnal box. Opt2 find a 400 hz gen &mount that to the motor. Opt 3 vfd like other response. Good luck Hugh
