Load Distribution or selection of breaker

10/19/2011 10:39 AM

Dear Engineers,

I want to select a incomer breaker in a panel for 14 Nos of single phase 63A load and 1 no of three phase 63A Load.

I splited the 5 nos of outgoing feeders for one phase of a three phase supply. So the total load of that phase is 315A. the second phase is 315A and third phase is 252A. And one more load of 3 phase 63A.

I just convert this this single phase current as three phase current i.e 545A and add with the three phase current 63A. Total load current is 608A. Selection of the breaker is 630A.

Is it Correct? Please kindly clarify or kindly anybody guide me to select properly.

No. Selection of the protective device is based only on maximum current in any phase. Balancing of that current is a good idea, and summation relates to energy calculations, but neither issue is germane to circuit protection. Circuit protection is only about the heat created by current flow and not letting that cause a fire.

Dear JRaef,

Ok. I have to take the maximum phase current 315A + three phase current 63A, the total is 378A. The selection of the breaker is 400A. Is it corrent? Pls
