No such thing as burn pit, you have to provide a pit for the collection of oil in case the oil leaks from the tank. There is no hard and fast rule for the drain pipe, select one which is adequate in consideration of the fact that accumulated oil is a fire risk.
Pit is not always practiced, an open tank filled with gravel serves the purpose it has a set of heavy duty channels to support the weight of the transformer.

Soak pit is the space below the transformer filled with gravel and which takes care of leakages.Oil pit is a Pit located away from the transformer having a valve ( normally 2 the valve in the transformer drain pipe is retained and one is provided at the end of the pipe. The valve near the pit is kept closed and the drain valve is kept open .The pipe will be filled with oil.In the event of a fire the oil is drained by opening the valve.Since it will be difficult to go near the transformer the valve is provided at the end of the drain pipe. The pipe can be of MS .Depending upon the oil content suitable size has to be selected so that in an emergency oil can be drained quickly.Normally these are used on power transformers of capacity 10MVA and above.
