In Tents Cold to Lower Cost HVAC ?

10/22/2011 2:25 AM

Non bivouac tents (pyramid or cone) come to a point at their peak it would be fairly easy to hang a twin 12 volt inlet outlet blower. The outlet side passing the hottest air from the tents peak out. The inlet side drawing air through a wick in water frame, hung on the outside of the tent. The air being drawn in suitably cooled by the evaporating water. In very dry conditions the humidity might be welcome if not suitable frame metal work could re-condense the evaporated water. Labour cost of running, interchanging vehicle batteries. P.S. Large frame might shield the sun. A pebble might have been made of stone if we didn't have a Creator.

A stone is usually considered larger than a pebble. If you want to make a pebble out of a stone, you can hit the stone with a hammer. I don't know if this the method the Creator uses, unless the creator is Thor.

If the ambient air is warm, it is doubtful that the vapor from an evaporative cooler would condense on the frame.

Let convection do the work.

The cost to remove the moisture added by your wick will offset any reduction in temperature.

Talk to Choate.

I may be missing the point but to keep an "Indian Tipi" type tent cool, an inner skin is used, positioned parallel and a few inches from the outer skin. Now, for cooling, the inner skin is left open at the bottom, around the circumference, so as to draw air in and upward, taking much of the convected heat from the out side with it and emptying at the top where it has been left open. In contrast, to retain warmth in colder times, the bottom of the inner tent is closed, as is the top, and the trapped air helps insulate. Depending on how hot and dry it is, clothing can be dowsed with a bit of water, and the evaporation will keep the wearer cool. A fine mist hand powered water sprayer really helps.

It's been many years since I have done this but, you can apply an elastomeric radiant barrier coating to the exterior of the tent.

This worked ridiculously well in keeping it cool on a hot day, although, you lose every bit of light the bare tent allowed through. It was great for taking a nap in the afternoon of a hot day.
