Emergency Generator Panel

10/22/2011 2:10 PM

Dear all Expert

I am mechanical engineer consultant for offshore oil and gas platform, please find my doubt below

1. Usually Local control panel and remote control panel for emergency generator is under instrumentation discipline scope or electrical discipline scope?

2. The Emergency generator is located at safe area, and as per project specification indicate that the generator only shall be suitable use in safe area. And my doubt is here, does this mean the generator itself is unclassified area but other electrical item like junction box, panel, cable gland, auxiliary motor have to comply with hazardous area according to other spec. e.g. Spec for Junction box, spec for electrical motor?

Regards

Ethan

Be very careful about soliciting information regarding subjects on offshore installations without first stating the registered country and flag state authotity... I.E. BV, ABS, Lloyds, Etc. They all have slightly different and all have very definite rules in regards to this and all other subjects.

1. Generator control panel is under the scope of mechanical enngineer who take cares of the whole package. Instrument and electrical engineer shall provide input interms on interface signals, power requirement etc. They may have concern on the panel's dimension if you want to place it inside electrical room, or intrument control room.

2. If the generator really located in safe area, than safe area rated equipment is practically acceptable. However be cautios on equipment that still require to be energized after confirm gas detection on the plant (e.g. emergency lube-oil pump)
