CCD Camera, Computer and Telescope!!

10/22/2011 2:31 PM

I've been given a few 1/3" monochrome board cameras with the CCD sensors (RS stock No. 185-3158) I've been searching on the web for a way to get this camera to produce it's image on my computer! It has 4 connections which are:-

1.+9v

2. 0v

3. video output

4. video ground

On the leaflet, it gives loads of jargon and also says the signal system is CCIR.

Can anybody suggest a way (if it's possible) to connect this up?

First thoughts are to just butcher a USB for the video out and video ground, then connect the other two connections to a seperate 9V supply!

Now the telescope bit!!

If I can get this working, I want to get some shots of the planets and 'stuff'! I've downloaded Registax 6 to do the layered multi exposures (never done it before so forgive the terminology!) Is there anything I am over looking?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

There is a lot of info available online. You could start with QCUIAG, http://www.qcuiag.org.uk/ based in the UK; or Cloudy Nights, http://www.cloudynights.com/ based in the US. You can probably find a Yahoogroups group that could help. There are a number of books, too.

I've used Registax for planet photography myself and it's fairly easy to use. In my case I used a Canon camera in movie mode, taking hundreds of 1/30th second exposures and stacking them. In my case I needed to first process the .avi files using a program called VirtualDub before Registax recognized the files.

What size and type of 'scope do you plan to use?

I've only got a 4 1/2" Reflector at the moment but the other night I wedged my sony cybershot on the end of a little 4mm lens with a barlow and took a shot of Jupiter! I was quite pleased with it! I know I can do better and remembered the CCD cameras I was given ages ago, so I started thinking about what I could do to improove the image! Went out tonight and I think I saw the big red spot but unfortunately it clouded over as I was faffing about with the camera!

Thanks for the sites, I'll give them a look over

Reflector? Looks like a CATadioptric 'scope.

Since it has video output, you might try one of these little guys:

http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Products/Consumer+Products/Dazzle/Dazzle+Video+Archiving/Dazzle+DVD+Recorder+Plus.htm

Check and make sure the signals are compatible, though, and also read some of

the reviews. Some people have good luck with it, some don't. I'm one of the

former and for transferring my old video tapes to DVD it works great. I think (?)

it'll work with several different sorts of video signals, but read up first so you don't

get stuck with incompatible products. Watch it here, though, because Google

says CCIR is a European signal standard.

As for the telescope idea, I've done some simple shots with my Nikon 990 and a

Meade telescope. They work OK, but you need to get an adapter that will hold

the camera absolutely steady in relation to the scope. I found one at CKC Power,

they may have something adaptable to your needs.

Sounds like a fun project, let us know how it works out!

You can't just connect the camera to the USB. You might look into something like this:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&N=0&A=endecaSearch&InitialSearch=yes&Q=&Ntt=Video+To+USB+Adapter

Disclaimer: I haven't used this and don't know if it is compatible with you video camera but it looks like it might work.

Regards.

As the Pt. # is from RS Components, a well renowned vendor.

They have got a full library of well written Application Notes and supply one copy with your order free of cost.

Just search their site or write them for a copy.

I can't say that by connecting Signal points to a USB port will run it but camera only works if it application is run or it is installed.

I didn't think I could just connect it up to a USB but sometimes you gotta dream!

Searching the RS site for your part number didn't find anything. The CCIR output is, I think, interlaced video.
