Programming an automotive PROM?

04/25/2007 11:53 AM

Can anyone provide info on the programming inside an Engine Control PROM module and the CPU itself? I would like to interface it to a PC to review and customize some settings.I am aware of the caveats of modifying factory settings, but curiosity more than anything else drives this question.

Thanks

Greetings,

Several companies have ready made software to do what you are asking.

But like most things, there is a 1000 ways to skin a cat, none right and none wrong, just different.

So too are the communication protcols and languages used by the different auto manufacturers different.

The Make and Model and year will tell the tail of what to use.

I have heard of a number of black-box "programmers" available to hook the auto computer to a PC. I would try a reputable auto parts distributor or check in the mail-order catalogs and on the Internet. I am sure the "programmers" would have to be matched to the make and model and year of auto.

Greetings,

Most if not all of the black box programmers have a canned set of parameters to load into ECU. I have used several over the years and have been happy with them.

I am very happy with the latest one for my F350 6.0 diesel.

The programmer has tree tune levels, a 30 a 60 and a Crazy 115 Hp increase over stock.

For a big old truck, it will blister the tires if not careful at the stoplight.
