2000 Cavalier Shut Down

10/26/2011 8:27 AM

Car doing two things. When it won't start, nothing will come on that requires the key in the on position (stereo, windshield wipers, etc) but everything that doesn't require key works (headlights, brake/hazards, horn, etc). When does start it will randomly shut off while driving. Usually get lucky and will restart first or second time then does the thing I described first. Thought it was the Locktronics security system because that wasn't lighting up or flashing and it isthe ignition interrution type. Removed it and reconnected original ignition circuit. Did it again. Died driving and now wont restart. Anyone have any ideas? As information, key does turn, doesn't hang, springs back from starting position to on position normally etc. And when it shuts off while driving there is no warning and it doesn't sputter or backfire or anything. It literally just dies like flipping off a light switch.

Most likely problems are:

1. Ignition key is bad.

2. Possible bad starting (DME) relay.

3. Wiring or connector failure.

I would have a look at the relays and unplug and replug them in. Tapping on the DME relay when trying to start will sometimes get it to trip if it is bad. That is the easiest and cheapest thing to do.

The next most likely cause is the ignition key lock itself, but if you get access to the key from behind the column, make sure the connector is fully engaged into the ignition key and not dirty or corroded.

I'm starting to feel the same way about Cavalier threads as I felt about, "Stairway To Heaven", back in the 70s. It just wouldn't stop.

just wondering. could it be the ignition switch? or a wire connection leading to the switch that's plugged in wrong? [reversred]

What's the key look like? Is it old and worn down to the point where it doesn't reliably engage the ignition switch tumblers?

<Edit>

Oops, sorry, AH! I just noticed that was your #1 question.

Get a test light. Follow the purple wire at the ignition switch as it goes to the clutch safety switch or the neutral safety switch. Then the firewall, and then the starter solenoid. The first thing in that order that does not light up when in the start position is your starting point.
