Windows XP Repair

10/28/2011 10:22 AM

I inadvertently deleted a file from my windows XP. I want to restore it. I have the installation disc, and I can start it from my CD drive. I can then go into the repair console.

I'm not sure what to do next. The Microsoft Knowledge base article wasn't helpful.

What do I do to restore my missing file?

Is it still in the recycle/trash bin? You can restore it from there if it is.

You can also try restoring your computer to a time just before you deleted the file. It may bring it back.

If you deleted a windows OP file use the system restore function. Will revert system to before it was deleted. START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/SYSTEM TOOLS/ SYSTEM RESTORE. Pick a date before the mishap.

If you deleted a file you created with some application. Go to Piriform's web site down load Recuva it's freeware. It will recover any documents unless the space that it was on the disc was over written.

You should try what Kramarat and Ozzb suggest and see if you can get lucky by finding the file in the trash or maybe even restore. A lot of us don't bother with restore because it's a hog and usually doesn't work all that good.

With the install disk you need to run Repair - but NOT from the recovery console. If you have files that you should backup then do it before running Repair. I've seen instances where it will wipe the documents and desktop folders back to default ... read that EMPTY. If you can't get in at all to save your files, then go buy a cheap usb disk adapter and use another computer to read your drive just like a flash drive. Save whatever you need to and then do the repair.

When windows comes up to the setup screen, option 2 of "repair a Windows XP installation" this is NOT what you want. You need to go on past this using "Setup Windows XP now". Go on past the license and then your operating system will be shown in the lower box. Highlight it and press R for repair.

Here's a link. http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsystems/ss/instxprepair1.htm

Good luck with it.

All else fails, gather up all your driver files and do the good ole' reformat trick.

Hi One & All,

If you are trying to recover a FILE that you deleted with "Installation Disk"; It sounds like you deleted a "SYSTEM FILE". Trying going to "SAFETY MODE" which reloads lot of Windows files.

The following is how you get into the "SAFETY MODE":

1. Do a cold BOOT UP/START UP

2. Start right a way pressing function key "F8" until you hear a "Beep"

3. Select "Safe Mode"

You will know that you are in "Safe Mode" because it will say so in each "Connors" plus a warning that you have limit functions.

You need not "LOG IN"

Then shut down and reboot.

Please let us know if this works for you.

BEN

Thanks for all the help folks.

I tried system restore and it couldn't do a restore.

I couldn't just copy the file(s) from another computer as I wasn't sure what I'd lost.

I used the system file checker as you recommended and it seems to have fixed the problem.

Thanks again.

The best repair is to install a Linux "live" CD in duel boot and forget the Microsoft operating system altogether.

Yeah, Windows and Linux "duel" well together.

If you lost the program, you can reinstall it. If you lost your data files go to this link and get the "Easeus data recovery wizard free edition". It's free for recovering 1024MB of data (1Gig). It's really easy to use (click thru) and does a great job. http://easeus.com/
