Which Operating System is Mostly Used By The Prammers?

What is a "prammer"--an infant in a baby carriage?

All of them, they have to cater to the customers needs. Customers may have a preference on which OS they use. Some OS do different tasks better them others.

3. Then it becomes machine and industry dependent, frequently determined by an industry leader who has driven the market, or by the first to market with an OS that is certifiable for safety purposes (Aviation and Medical devices for instance).

I believe Win XP coz most of those geeks needs a platform which support many softwares at a stretch,less graphics and more user friendly.

Agreed, except most companies are moving to Windows 7. But no denying Windows owns most company desktop environments.

I don't think Prammers require operating systems.

It very much depends on what you wish to program. Web based applications tend to be fairly much cross-platform, although testing has to be carried out on each browser & OS combination to ensure adequate performance on each. Some companies still use Windows-specific apps which do not work on anything other than Explorer, but these are now by far in the minority. I am using Safari to type this response, and all my additional spacing will be lost when I press the 'preview' button, as white space is handled differently from other browsers and the CR4 admin have not found that to be worthy of attention yet. (I use Firefox most times, as inserting images and other formatting is supported there).

I am going to assume 'Prammers' is actually 'Programmers'.

Windows OS (Operating System) for most (because most are windows), Apple Mac OS is preferred for specialty graphics design.

As for the particular OS, it really doesn't matter as most programming packages work across multiple OS versions.

Most programmers I know of all kinds use a form of windows* at least part of the day due to:

a) having to communicate with non-programmers. The path of least resistance (especially in a corporate environment) is Windows/Outlook/Office.

b) writing software that runs on their customers' systems. In the desktop apps world, the development tools for a target usually also run on that target.

c) They are in a cubicle and use the company provided workstation and software. See (a) above.

Windows XP is probably still the most prevalent because most programmers I know will stick with what works as long as possible. Until their tools no longer run on their Windows version, they don't choose to add to their headaches.
