Ever Talked to a Rivet? Engineering and Literature

Dear all,

Never designed a ship, and I have never been in a boat in stormy waters either.

But now, I could feel a bit like both.

Maybe well known for those of you coming of english culture, It has been a lucky finding for me. More than that, It gave me goose bumps.

The ship that found herself, by Rudyard Kipling.

That was a delightful story. I was once involved in designing and crewing a crab boat not much smaller than the steamship in Kipling's story. The amount of flexure that occurs is surprising at first, and then one gets used to it.

For another take on engine room lore, search out "Gullicksen and the 500-pound Hallucination" in John Dalmas's short story collection, Otherwhens, Otherwheres.
