Wind Power Illusion

11/04/2011 9:04 AM

Excerpts from my book "Conned with the Wind"

WIND ENERGY

PRODUCTIVITY

Intermittency

Intermittent energy requires reserves for inactive periods.
One cannot expect households to stop their heating or
refrigerators, nor industry to stop its operations, just
because the wind stopped blowing.

Now, reserves must come from plants capable to start, stop,
change the rate in matter of minutes, which practically
restricts them to fossil plants (oil, gas, coal). Fossil
plants are the most polluting even in permanent regime.
In the irregular regime of reserves their pollution ratio
is still increased by a large factor.

An intermittent source provides only that part of its
installed capacity, which corresponds to the periods of
activity.
Now, wind turbines shut down for:
-wind too weak,
-wind too strong (for security reasons),
-wind-blasts (for security reasons),
-ideal conditions, when all wind turbines work at full
capacity, because it would heat white the high tension lines,
which were not build to accommodate wind energy picks.

Their productive capacity, corresponding to the periods of
activity has been evaluated in the 2005 report of E.On, the
leading German electricity provider controlling about
15 000 wind turbines.

A quote from E.On report_2005

"In 2004 two major German studies investigated the size of
contribution that wind farms make towards guaranteed capacity.
Both studies separately came to virtually identical conclusions,
that wind energy currently contributes to the secure production
capacity of the system, by providing 8% of its installed
capacity.
That is, wind power construction must be accompanied by almost
equal construction of new conventional power plants, which will
be used very nearly as much as if the wind turbines were not
there."

Translated to ordinary language, E.On considers wind power
as mere window dressing behind which the real work is done
by fossil reserves.

I would have liked to see more links or foot notes in this article. Without references, it sounds like one of the rants that I have been justly been accused of. This article does seem quite reasonable however, and the whole industry may require some more oversight.

So many good people have put their hearts, souls and lives into these projects that I cannot really think that they would ALL be part of "the greatest fraud of the 20th century". So, it really would be good to be able to do some fact checking.

(Right now, it sounds like you had money in a tidal current project that you could not get funding for!)

Aside from shameless self promotion, just what are you trying to say????

Your post is an insult to every one who correctly participates in this forum!
Get lost!

By the way, I heard the other day that Obama was responsible for the attack on Pearl Harbor, too. Why isn't that in your book? How you can blame Obama (regardless of any blind hatred you might harbor for black men) for something which was well established long before he came on the scene is totally over the top.

If you want to discuss wind power, someone here might be willing to debate you. I believe that your motives are much less noble. Crass commercialism.

I thought you were doing quite well until "tortures by Nazis"

Two posts on CR4, and 3,471 words. Wow.

You certainly are... Naw, I can't say it. It's too easy.

So how and where are these multi megawatt turbines consuming half of their own power?IE what is in the design that draws that much that I am personally not aware of?

Keeping the exciter circuits for the generator rotors powered up only takes a few to several kilowatts at most even on a massive 2+ megawatt generator assy and the gearbox and bearing heaters only run when the bearings are cold IF the abiant temps are low enough to warant it.

As far as load balancing for standby there are many many systems already in place that do not use any fossil fuels. Pumped water energy storage is one key one that gets ignored in every one these 'xxxxxxx renewable energy systems is bad because' rants.

Also relating to turning power lines white hot, WTF? That statement alone shows you have near zero knowledge and understanding of how our electrical grids and related components are designed and work let alone how they are managed, protected, and what they are even made of.

Mostly this all came off to me as a either uneducated or poorly misinformed rant about things that you do not clearly understand or ever cared to.

I give this entire post a solid DA rating. (DA standing for Dumb Ass)

I would have given it an 'F' for Fail but that would have been an insult to failures everywhere to have me include you in their ranks.
