Power Cable Sizes

11/10/2011 8:19 AM

Power cables of any core are usually specified by cross sectional area like 1, 1.5, 2.5, 4, 6, 10, 16, 25, 35 square mm, etc. What is the relationship between such areas and S.W.G or A.W.G numbers.? e.g What is the equivalent SWG/AWG number of 6mm2 XLPE power cable.

You are a real piece of work.

Not only do you want someeone to do your work for you, you are too lazy to even review the elementary questions you have asked before.

Power Cables Ampacity

I hope you don't claim to be an engineer.

There is a formula (see the wikipedia link below) but who cares. I don't think any professional used it in life. For conversion of AWG to sq mm or vice-versa, you will never find the exact equivalent size, always need to go for the closest one from the table. Note the maximum size of AWG is 4/0. Any size larger than 4/0 is identified by kcmil or MCM. The AWG/kcmil size seems very weird to the IEC personnel to adapt in first place as happened to me as well.

6 sq mm is close to 10 AWG or 9 AWG. Since 10 AWG is most common size, 6 sq mm is generally considered equivalent to 10 AWG.

As others said, you can get this information readily in the internet with simple search.

Tanx alot msamad.this was my basic question whch you got.basically the areas whch are given in the AWG tables are not exactly same as the standar cable sizes (1,1.5,2.5,4 sq mm etc). e.g if i want to calculate the ampacity of 1 sq mm cable based on AWG tables, then i got no AWG number corresponding exactly to 1mm2. #17 AWG has 1.04sq mm while #18 has 0.82 sq mm area,so will i take #17 or #18 for my 1sq mm cable ampacity calculation.

AWG 17 is more suitable. Also according to british standard,SWG 18 is equivalent to 1mm^2. In a similar fashion you can select either AWG or SWG cable/wire sizes nearly equivalent to mm^2.

I wonder from where you will get the 1mm2 cable to fix in place, once you have completed the calculation.

I would have thought one does the otherway round. one calculates the current and then based on ambient factors, insulations, etc and current selects the cable.
