Conductors Animal Names

11/14/2011 8:58 AM

i have seen overhead conductors names based on animals and birds names. what is basic difference between them . do these names refer to some property like ampacity/ diameter of the conductor or they just arbitrary names.

also are these animal names are just for overhead bare lines or also for power cables ?

also i am a bit confused how stranded conductors are specified i.e. specified by their overall conductor diameter or by the number of strands.

The animal names are a shortcut way of describing various standardized overhead power distribution lines, as typically used by utilities.

In general, power cable sizes are descibed by their cross sectional area of conductor material. Then there is a further description of the number of strands when you want to consider flexibility and tensile strength. Insulation rarely enters into the sizing description of cables, at least not until you get to conduit fill issues, at which time you have already picked out a cable based on ampacity (cross sectional area of conductor) and voltage.

This convention is used only in some parts of the world and are unknown elsewhere. As mentioned these are shortcuts to describe the conductors and there are various conventions eg ACSR are birds, AAC are flowers etc

No They aren't that sexist - It is alternate - Man and woman and also they are defined earlier even before they happen (sometimes)

For example before Katrina was Dennis

Only may be one of the sexes are a bit more destructive and hence stays back in mind but not in the chart (An hurricane with too much of destruction is retired - er- the name is retired and replaced in the list with another name)
