Ball Valve Seat Design and Dimensions

11/14/2011 10:31 PM

I have inquiry regarding ball valve seat, in our developing tool prototype we have a 3way ball valve of 2" bore , the tool is exposed to high temperature up to 350degf, while nominal operating temp is 300degf. The seal will see a differential pressure from low as 300 psi , and in critical times up to 3000psi. The valve operation requires low torque seals (soft seats).type of medium to be Mud (less than 1% sand).

Plz advise on what is the minimum thickness (dimensions) for the seat!!? And what do u recommend for the seat material that suites the design parameters.!?

Any material to help on how to design valve seat in terms of dimensions boundaries.!

Regards,
Thank u

Just contact a supplier of, "3way ball valve of 2" bore " and ask them.

@lyn,

thank u for ur feedback, ive done that , however suppliers they dont provide any info regarding the seat except the material used. i need specifically the dimensions or how do i design custom valve seat!

Unless you are willing to spend a lot of money and time designing and making a custom valve, give your requirements to your supplier.

If your suppliers will not help you, get different suppliers.

thank u for ur feedback ,

ive contacted many suppliers , my issue is with the seat design (dimensions) however the seat materials and general types of seat design are available , only dimensions of the seat it self i cant figure out how to be calculated . rest components identified for my prototype.

Are you designing your own valve? If so, why? Are you attempting to design a valve for production and sale?

You will NOT save any money by designing and building your own valves for an application. Valve manufacturers have already done the engineering and it sounds like you are second-guessing them.

Sounds like you are reinventing the wheel.

Another way to pirate copy something is to buy an original and reverse engineer it.

My question to you is this: who else is doing what you are doing, and what equipment are they using? If the issue is the size of the valve, substitute multiple smaller valves plumbed, and synchronized together. Truly, there is very little that is new under the sun. just find out how others are doing what you want, and copy. If you need to improve something, that is fine, but first find out what is working for others. Good luck.

thank u all for ur appreciated comments ,

however, am not trying to invent ball valve as a whole , but iam developing a product that part of it is a sub contain ball valve , but not the entire system is ball valve,

ive done the everything related to the ball , housing and actuator , only confusing part to me is the seat , material identified , design identified, only matters the dimensions how to be calculated according to the operation environment parameters .

ball valve supplier , each has his own seat design n dimension , coz the seat doesnt follow any standards but only the materials . by ordering one ball valve n do reverse engineer will not be satisfying the optimum design . as it is confusing which supplier i may trust his seat design.

"it is a sub contain ball valve , but not the entire system is ball valve"

Are you making entire valve yourself or getting ball valve part from other supplier? Seat is a part of valve and if you are buying valve, it will come with seat which is designed by supplier based on conditions of fluid specified by you. Why you want to design seat for your supplier? You specify the conditions like fluid properties, temperature and pressure with variations and the life you expect, rest is their job. If you are not happy with their selection, discuss with them with proper reasoning.

For the material you have described, seat material should be wear and aberration resistant. Depending on the seat material (you have not hinted), seat thickness may vary.

Many people think that "design" is a purely theoretical process using only ideas and calculations. This sounds like you. It is all those things, but it is also gaining access to the information you are seeking, either from having that information given to you, or by obtaining it yourself through what is called "research". Even though the word in English sounds like "searching for something again", in practice it often means finding the information for yourself from actually physically making, testing, and modifying and making again a product, so that you now have the information you seek. Once you have gone through this process, you will discover that there are costs involved, in time and money. One option is to retain this information for yourself in the form of a "trade secret" which you keep for yourself without sharing it with others. If you decide to make and sell a product, like the "three-way ball valve", so that you can gain income through a profit, the amount of that profit and the lifestyle you derive from it, is dependent on keeping your trade secret away from others. Buying your product and "reverse engineering" your three-way ball valve is not as easy as it sounds. Some people (or companies) who have tried that course have gone bankrupt through making mistakes in their reverse engineering. So you can see that if you expect those people who are making profit and income from making three-way ball valves to share their knowledge with you, you need to make it worth it to them by sharing your expected profit and income with them. The presumed value and justification for using government powers to create the patent system is to encourage more rapid development of new products and thus more general economic activity by using legal protection for the originators of new ideas. The price that patent holders pay for this protection against others using the patented ideas is that they must openly reveal those ideas in the patent application they submit. If the patent is granted, then that information is published bu the patent office. Of course, if the patent is not granted, then the applicant has revealed their trade secret without in return getting anything except the cost of the patent process. That is why some patent lawyers may offer to provide patent application service for no cost unless the patent is approved, since they now hold that trade secret information which they can use for themselves (sell, etc), and legal action against them is difficult since the patent office has already determined that the information is not patentable, and the lawyers know that the patent applicants do not want to pay (or cannot afford) legal costs. This should help you understand why it is hard for you to get the information you are asking for. You need to find a "sucker" to tell you, and would you trust the information from someone dumb enough to tell you? If you go under from using their bad information, they might be smart enough to offer to buy (for a song) your idea then patent it with their good information themselves. If this statement is regarded as "off topic", I disagree. It is relevant for any post which asks others to do their engineering for them.
