Grading Ring vs Corona Ring

11/15/2011 9:24 AM

what is the basic difference between grading ring and corona rings.

in theory gaurd/grading rings are to equilize electric stress distribution across discs of suspension insulators and need to be installed at the lowest disc where HT line is connected. it is electrically connected to the HT conductor.

now what is the purpose of corona ring ? is it electrically connected to the HT line? is it installed on one side of insulators or on both ends of insulators.

in the diagram below, are the rings around insulator string grading rings or corona rings ? tanx in advance

Grading ring and corona ring are two different names for the same item. Their purpose is as you say, to equalize or "smooth" the electric field on electrical apparatus, especially at insulators and connectors. Sharp edges cause sharp changes in electric field, and the rounded corona rings or balls spread out the gradient. If the field has large changes in a small distance, there is more tendency for corona or electrical discharge to take place, often causing damage over time to the apparatus with eventual failure.
