Reciprocating vs Centrifugal Compressor Efficiency

11/15/2011 11:14 PM

i'm looking for the comparison between reciprocating and centrifugal compressor efficiencies.

The efficiency which i got from specification sheets is for reciprocating is volumetric efficiency and for centrifugal compressor is adiabatic and polytropic.

I want to know about overall efficiency of both for a comparison purpose. It can be in general form.

Do the data allow you to compare gas flow and power consumption at equal pressure levels?

Largely depends on the percent of load each unit will see. If lets say the centrifugal is running 90 to 99 percent of load during it's operation hours, then it maybe considered the better of the two. But, if your going to be un-loading the unit a large percentage of time, then the reciprocating unit maybe the better choise to make.

Some of the screw manufactures have reconized this and have made thier units to conform to a better operation standards for power consumption then they use to. Might check into these as well. But again, I think it depends on the load your designing the system to.

For same process pameters, overall efficiencies of reciprocating compressor are better than Centrifugal compressors. The reliability and maintenance considerations goes in favor of centrifugal compressors.

Why would you compare these different compressors?

What is the application?

These compressors are installed at our plant at a smae service reciprocating was installed after 11 years DBN. So i'm compairing their efficiencies in a theoratical way.
