VW Thing Fuel Tank Venting

11/16/2011 12:24 AM

1974 VW Thing. Fuel tank cap - Is it venting or non venting. I am speaking to reduction of pressure inside the tank as a result of lowering fuel levels being equalized by the venting gas cap. Not all caps are venting and in the VW Thing the evaporative emissions equipment vents positive pressure to an expansion tank and charcoal recieving tank.

GA. Is it just a pressure relief valve, or does it work both ways, and prevent a vacuum from being created in the tank as fuel is consumed?

Thanks for your response and orange you nice to do it so quickly

I include a photo of mine currently awaiting fuel pump replacement so the garage shot will have to do.

The cap is different obviously so I still do not know. I have decided to run a vent line from the filler overflow to atmosphere as the vapor capture equipment is leaky. The pressure tank pours liquid gas and the charcoal canister hoses are rotten. Cheaper and less balky to seal off the vapor vents from the tank until I want to restore to original.

The entire gas tank assy is available....Your cap there looks like replacements I have seen for the Thing...After 1970 most gas caps were non-vented because of pollution regulations...I'm sure one of the forums, at one of those links I posted, will provide a person who knows all about the Thing...
