Any Gears for poor lubrication would pit quickly especially heavily loaded ones like your.

What is the size of the ball mill and the RPM?

At our mills usually grease spray lubrication is used. However for lightly loaded ones some high viscousity oil is a possibility.

Depending on RPM of the mill, some people uses graphite powder but at low RPM, cardomium compound works well.

Open Gear and Wire Rope Compound

Shell Cardium Compound are a range of high viscosity, residual-type (bituminous)

lubricants, which are recommended principally for open gears and cane bearings in

the sugar industry which require an adhesive, high load-carrying product. All grades

are blends of bitumen, and heavy mineral based oils, blended in different proportions

to suit various applications.

Applications

Shell Cardium Compound are recommended for use in open gears operating at low speeds and cane

bearings. They may also be used for lubrication of wire ropes.
