Required Cable Size

11/22/2011 12:20 PM

What is the general formula for calculating the size of Copper and Alluminium cable?

1) If I have 35 mmsq copper cable, then what is the current capacity? Suggest me formula for both alluminium and copper cable of same size.

2) For 100 amps. Current carrying, which size of Alluminium or copper cable required?

I required exact equation for that.

Plz. help.

Thanks

The general formula is British Standard 7671 <sigh>.

First you must know where you are installing this cable. This will then allow you to figure out which wiring standards, if any, are the wiring standards that you are legally compelled to meet. The correct standard will also identify if you are qualified to install cables at this location. (Something I doubt because you ask this fundamental question.)

You will find that most standards do not have precise equations because a safe installation of electric cables that handle 100 amperes of current involves more than just the linear concerns of voltage drop and heat dissipation.

I required exact equation for that.

There isn't one as it depends on cable, application and standard specific de-rating factors.

Please read the site rules as homework questions (which this sounds like) are not allowed on CR4.
