Difference between "AMF - ATS - Auto Change Over"

11/23/2011 12:14 AM

Dear All,

I would like to under stand Difference between the following terminalogies.

"AMF - ATS - Auto Change Over"

As I understand with this (Theorically and Practically)

AMF: Auto Mains failure triggered a signal to Gen Set and gen Set take over as another powr source (Auto / Manual). there is a gap of around 30 second to switch over power.

ATS: Auto Transfer Switch will switched immediately to another power source available in around 2 seconds and save intereption in power equipments operational as usual with out any break down.

Auto Change Over: It is almost same as AMF

I will appreciate if some of my fORUM COLLEAGUES WILL EXPLAIN IN DETAIL AND PROPER USAGE OF THESE .

THANKS AND BEST REGARDS.

A.T.S. & A.M.F Panels (Auto Changeover Systems)

Special Modules are implanted in these panels to achieve required function of automation where alternate power supplies are available to be used.

AS:

Auto Start Panel initiates Generator to start and take load failure of the source. Providing all protection to Gen Set with complete & comprehensive measurement capabilities.

ATS:

Auto Transfer switch transfer load to Generator source according to operational Sequence pre programmed. These Panels can be supplied with manual over-ride system as well.

AMF:

This system comprises of an alternative standard control panel with MCM
(microprocessor based control module) and a changeover system housed in a separate wall mounted or freestanding panel. It has an auto sensing system to start the Generator and switch the load to Generator quickly in case of mains supply failure and again back to main when the supply is restored. It has different kind of indications and tripping systems.

These panels can also be incorporated in the Main LT Panels or in Sub Main Panels. It makes easy for the transfer of power without any shutdown.

Depends on the usage and understanding, both ATS and AMF are automatic transfer switches meant to transfer power to loads or equipment.

When mains supply fails the AMF(AUTOMATIC MAINS FAILURE switch or panel) monitors and trigger the emergency source(generator) which starts and build up voltage and within a few seconds transfer power to the loads or equipment under operation. When mains supply is restored, the generator automatically stops and mains power is transfered to to the loads or equipment. You can also decide to disengage the auto switch and engage only the manual switch for manual operation of the generator.

The ATS(AUTOMATIC TRANSFER SWITCH) just as the AMF automatically transfers power to loads or equipment under operation. Some people as well as switchgear manufacturers call it ATS while others call it AMF.They are both for automatic transfer of power. When i build for clients,i call it AMF SWITCH PANEL.Other manufacturers i know call theirs ATS switch panel.

Whether the AMF and ATS logic same ? If "yes" then shall we use the ATS in between the Generator & EB supply?
