I'd look in a bearing design guide, ask my bearing supplier, look on-line at bearing supplier web sites or consult my copy of Machinerys Handbook.

It is something like this- Under actual running condition at the rated load, the roller bearings would work with a light pre-load (may be a few tens of microns). From there you must back calculate to the cold bench end-play

For Hydrodynamic journal bearings it is dependant on the oil film thickness that can carry the load without breaking and you don't land up under boundary lubrication condition.

The first information which you did not give is the type of bearing! there are 1000 types of bearings which one you think about ?

As many other asking questions you believe we are wizards and able to read from far away your thoughts. We are not !!!!

As long as the information is not complete no consistent answer can be formulated.

THIS IS VALID for ALL who want a support.

This depends on the type, size and physical location of the bearing. It also depends on your resources and knowledge.

If it is an easily accessible roller bearing you can check the un-loaded portion with a feeler gauge.

Its also very common to do a lift check... This involves the use of a dial indicator preloaded then set to 0. You would then lift (or jack) the equipment until the load is shifted from the loaded portion to the un-loaded portion, you then find the bearing clearance on the indicator.

However you need to be more specific, what equipment is this bearing on, what type of bearing, approximate ID / OD

Regards,

Tim

First of all why do you want to calculate the clearance?

OK let us say you are able to calculate, what you will do with the calculated value.

So, you have to share the application, the size, the speed and the problem only then you will get some feedback.
