Frequency Rating for ULE (Universal Lite Engine)

11/27/2011 9:39 AM

Hi,

Wonder if any one can help enlighten me on the difference of 50 and 60 hz used for the universal light engine product using high power leds. We assemble the products here. The first portion of the light engine is the power supply either 240 or 110 input stepped down to 24 or 12 or 36v dc. and the second portion is the led driver and the third section is the led array.

Does it make any differnce if this proudct is used in USA on 60 cycles?. Here in most asian countries, the frequency is 50 hz. The product we assemble also find its way to the US. Please advise.

The lights won't care. They use DC power.

This is a trick question, right?

Sure the LEDS are operated on DC but what about the the power supply unit? No problem too?

Thanks .

Yes, no problem too. The power supply isn't picky, 50 Hz, 60 Hz, whatever it takes.

Been there.

Didn't help explain why this device is called an "engine".

I have a literal mind. An engine, to me, is something that provides mechanical power for something.

I agree with Lyn. The word "engine" is used for a device that transforms a source of available energy in the environment into usable power. There was a time when technology was still a novelty that any devious device could be called and "engine", but we are not going back there, are we?

We are there.

The marketeers have taken over the asylum.

They don't know the real names or how the functions or properties are performed or derived so they call assemblies "engines".

A transformer will run cooler at 60Hz.

...and smoothing or filter caps might need to be different at 60Hz[p/]

It all depends on the loading really.

How do we know that the power supply isn't a switch mode p/s? If it is then some modification to the first stage mains rectifier filter might need to be changed for 60Hz.

I don't think it will really make a lick of practical difference though. Plug it in and see what happens.

This brings me to another topic. How did the 50hz and 60hz frequency in power generation started? Would be nice to know the historical background of this.

thanks

Here's a brief explanation of 50/60 Hz.

In short, 50 Hz vs 60 Hz is more likely similar to Coca Cola vs Pepsi ...

Thanks for the "engine" explanation. It really isn't an engine at all. It's an assembly. But if you want to call it an engine, fine.

I'm still trying to deal with booting my PC.

Cheers.
