Neutral Grounding Resistor

Whatever the equiments either alternator or transformer above 11000volts potential, star point neutral is earthed through a resistor,and the EF CT is located before the NGR. How does it limits the fault current from other equipments and whats the need for that. Also if one or two syncronised or operating in parallel found only one NGR closed out of 2, whats the need for two NGR's.
