Capacity of Micro Wave Ovens

11/29/2011 7:18 AM

Micro Wave Ovens are specified as 20,26......litres capacity. There are restrictions on the weight of the food stuff to be placed on the turn table. In case of my 26 litres capacity MWO weight limitation is 500gms. Now if you calculate the weight of say water of 26 litres volume it will be much more than 500gms.Does it mean that only light weight foods can be cooked on MWO?. To me it is specifications are misleading.

The volume capacity is 26 l. the weight capacity of the turntable is 500g. This weight capacity seems very low to me. I'd say 5000g would be more reasonable.

Nobody ever fills their MWO to volume capacity. You're being too literal minded.

I've never seen any weight limitation listed on any microwave oven...

Well, a volume of 26 litres (.92 ft3) tells me this is a small machine, perhaps appropriate for a small office or apartment. Can you get a whole chicken inside?

This would go together with a limit of 500 gram (about 1.1 pounds). Small, single serving machine.

This was another good chance at a Henway gag... I've worked that one kind of hard recently, I figure I should give it a rest for a while.

Microwaves are generally marketed in power rating and/or litre capacity and generally this is only to differentiate between models (product marketing). Larger microwaves will be able to fit bigger plates of food but all the power rating does is cook the food faster (at higher levels) and slower (at lower levels).

I have never run into a problem with weight restrictions in a microwave oven, mainly because the size of food necessary to exceed the weight of the turntable motor is almost never reached in normal residential and commercial use.

About the heaviest (realistic) thing I can think of would be a large thick-wall glass bowl of liquid and ingredients for (say) baking a cake (or perhaps a large frozen chicken on a plate), and the turntable motor should be able to handle that fine as long as the bowl, plate (or chicken) doesn't touch the sides as it rotates (causing extra friction and load on the turntable motor).

I think the main reason for the weight limit (which I am guessing is stated in your microwave manual - good on you for reading it by the way) is purely a warranty disclaimer so the microwave won't be misused (for metal smelting for example).

To me it is specifications are misleading.

The microwave equivalent of home stereo's PMPO power rating.

Just try stuffing 5000 grams of popcorn into a μ-wave, and see what happens!

(No, I haven't tried to experience this; it is only a thought experiment. )

Thanks to all. It is MWO of famous brand "LG". It has tiny China make motor for turn table. Initially motor was dragging turn table, so I complained to "LG". Their service engineer came and replaced the motor. He also showed me manual which had instructions under recepie column where in it was mentioned.Yes, my family is small only two of us Nest is Empty.

The capacity refers to the volume not weight, same as a fridge is given volume by liters, why they can't say cubic ft or cubic meters I don't know.
