Centrifugal Compressor Vibratation Problem

12/02/2011 8:46 AM

Customer has propylene gas 4-stage compressor. Vibrations on NDE bearing are slowly rising and now reached dangerously high level (45um). Vibrations at DE, which is rigidly coupled to turbine are low. No bearing temperature changes.

Major component is 1X, no phase changes since train was commissioned 1 year ago. I was suspecting bearing deterioration (1X, no changes on other bearings, gradual vibrations growth), but bearings can't improve (!). Contamination (fouling) will, in theory, produce the same pattern, but shouldn't vectors change?

Lost, need your opinion.

1- Check the shaft for bends and proper alignment with the bearings.

2- It is possible that one of the impellers has become loose on its shaft.

3- look for a possible wear of the shaft-end.

4- Clean up the bearing assemblies and re-lubricate

I am not the vibration specialist but have dealt with rotation equipment a lot.

You wrote that main component is 1X. Is it unbalance? Is it possible to define easily phase angle of this unbalance? If the phase angle changes something can be loosen - compressor disc in this case.

The bearing damages can create higher vibration. So, inspect the bearing, measure the clearances, if too big change the bearing.

Please let us know what is your findings if the train will be stopped for inspection.

Very often people ask here what to do but nobody will report later what he found and what was the reason of problem !

I suspect unbalance due to to contamination on blades, please check. What is the speed and type of compressor?
