Regarding Synchronous Generator

12/02/2011 9:22 AM

What will happen if a synchronous generator is run at a frequency other than the designed frequency, e.g. a 50 Hz generator is run at 60 Hz or 40 Hz.

Really now. Don't you have even an inkling of what will happen????

Do you know what a synchronous generator is????

The sounds like homework to me.

If you don't know the answer, take a guess.

They are known as synchronous generators because the speed of the rotor must always match the supply frequency.

The synchronous generator runs at synchronous speed only. ie., at synchronous frequenc.

Well, it appears that there had been some misunderstanding. O.K.

I am posing the question like this.

What will happen if a synchronous alternator designed to operate at 50 Hz. is operated in synchronism with a 60 Hz. or 40 Hz. grid?

And yes, I know that synchronous generators run at sunchronous speed. Whatever. Thank you all for reminding me.

...or underspeed shutdown.

Your original post too said the same so it didn't matter. Assuming the protections (speed like governers etc) are not in place or messed with and the generator is stand alone.

At lower frequencies - Efficiency would be just a bit lower.

At Higher frequencies- Along with above mechanical design aspect to be looked into.

Ha..ha..ha..

I ever did this but pls take a really careful regarding the winding configuration, some may need to change accordingly, protection has to be readjust, and may be you will have the power degrade. Pls take a deep on the service manual

Regards
