What kind of geiger counter or other device should I have to check for food safety. Radioactive contamination is my concern post Fukushima nuclear disaster. This is for personal use for myself and my family. Sincerely, Harold
You didn't say where you are located, but I'm assuming you are in USA, please correct me if I'm wrong.
The FDA has released a report of their monitoring on November 30, 2011, which is an up to date assessment of the threats of Fukushima radiation in the US food supply, based on their monitoring data. The summary indicates that Cs-137 and Cs-134 are the main isotopes of concern in this accident, although Sr-90 and others are monitored by FDA as well.
Global radiation data from Fukushima has also been published and is available in a discussion paper at the Journal "Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics" online. According to this report, 2% of radioactive Cesium fell on non-Japanese soil, 19% on Japan itself, and the rest on the Pacific Ocean. The lingering concern for your food supply would therefore be in Pacific seafood, and any food imported from Japan.
There are some good graphs and visual representations comparing data from the US and Japan in the investigation which is linked here.
The Japanese public have rapidly adopted personal radiation monitoring devices, as documented in this video.
If you are still concerned about monitoring food in the area where you live, you might try finding out who is supplying consumer devices in Japan, or start by talking to device providers about your concerns to decide which device would best meet your needs.
