Eulers Constant

12/05/2011 9:41 AM

I must admit I haven't been to school long enough to know how to read this number

For example on a plot for a curve the x-axis is in seconds and the y-axis is pressure, then the pressure is given as 4e+06 up to 8e+06. Can somebody please explain in normal english what these figures convert to in decimal numbers?

I'm aware or Eulers constant and have learned some about the relationship to natural logarithm. But I have no idea why it is written the way it is in the above example.

A likely reason for the 4e+06 format is the inability to do subscripts/superscripts in the font. The "e" stands for exponent (of 10).
