Soft Magnetic Wires

12/06/2011 7:25 AM

I am looking for soft magnetic wires(may be silicon steel used to make low loss laminations- drawn in the form of wire) about 0.3 to 0.5 mm diameter. I am unable to find a source. I am looking for suggestions pl.

What do you mean by "soft" in this context?

I have spent lot of time over the net browsing over this- without success. I even did correspond with a few steel wire manufacturers explaining what I am looking for. Most people making steel wires are targeting fencing or mesh making applications. They do not understand magnetic properties / electrical industry applications for soft magnetic wires. SOFT- in the sense- the wire does not retain magnetism after a magnetic field passes(when subject to certain ampere turns) through it. The magnetic losses are low when say a 50 or 60 Hz magnetic field is applied..

No idea about the properties - but have you looked at piano wire?

Thanks for your suggestion. Wikipedia does give a lot of information on Silicon steel (its composition etc) and piano wire too. Both seem to be different.

I don't have time to look around for you right now, but if you found the perfect wire, and it was able to carry a magnetic charge, it would be fairly easy to magnetize it yourself.
