Code 62 Flanges

12/06/2011 3:32 PM

I'm designing a piping system for a machine which uses up to 5000 psi hydraulic fluid. Ideally I would like to use socket weld code 62 fittings at a variety of locations. ASME B31.3 says no socket weld fittings for high pressure service. Why would there be socket weld fittings for code 62 fittings if ASME B31.3 says no. Do hydraulic systems fall under ASME B31.3 even ?

Providing your solution might help someone else with a similar problem.

They do make open butt weld Code 62 and 61 fittings.

I have always wondered why there are two types 61 and 62 why aren't they standard?

I agree with 3rd poster what was your solution?

Hello Pipeit,

Code 61 is rated at 3,000psi to 5,000psi depending on size (which can be up to 5") and Code 62 is rated at 6,000psi regardless of size (usually between 1/2" to 2" size).

Also everyone needs to be aware that just because you have a fitting rated at 6,000psi does not mean that the system can handle that pressure. Most times it is governed by the hoses used within that system.

Also SAE J518 has good information for details on flanged connections.
