Follow the Process Description document and the details on the Piping and Instrumentation Diagram. There should also be a Piping Standard that embraces it.

Thanks for the quick response. My question was how to decide the pressure rating of valves to be used in relation to the Pump Head. i.e if the pump head is 30m can we use PN 0.4 Kg/sq.cm of valves.

How to decide the Pressure rating of valves to be used in a 1000 KM pipeline. Does the pressure rating of the valves decrease along the pipeline

The pressure rating of any valve must exceed the maximum possible pressure in the pipeline, otherwise the valve will fail before the maximum pipeline pressure is reached.

  • In the case of a 1000km-long pipeline, though the operating pressure may reduce along its length due to flow, the case where there is no flow must also be considered, in which case the above statement remains true. For this specific case, there will already be piping standards and valve selection standards in place, as to do otherwise inceases the risk of process material loss and environmental impact in the event of a mechanical failure. These standards must be consulted to complete the selection procedure.

linesh...

That "1000 KM" pipeline makes your question sound very much like a homework problem...

Work out maximum pressure the valve will see in service (making sure you look at worst case) and select a valve of next higher rated pressure.
