AC Generator AVR

12/08/2011 10:37 AM

hi gents,

on most different types of avrs used for controling the output of ac generator 3 phase 380v or 220v, l noticed that the manufactorer use SCR to convert the ac in to varaible dc output.

i understand this, but i got an idea to use transistor instead of thyristor, i mean to convert the ac in to the regulator to dc with bridge rectifier and then use NPN transistor to control the output from the avr using a Zener diode same as in car battery charger alternater regulator and for sure i will use reheostat, and some other compenents.

is this possible to make simple avr for ac generator? please advice.

many thanks

A simple(?) AVR is a negative feedback controller whose primary goal is to keep the generator terminal voltage (input) at a constant value (set point) by adjusting the field current (output) of the generator. As long as you have a way of comparing the input (your bridge rectifier) against a reference value (your rheostat and zener diode) and then outputting a signal that causes a variable DC to adjust accordingly (your NPN transistor and some other components), then you have a simple AVR.
