Cut one of the connections, then use a multimeter on ohm scale to check the resistance. You will have to cut it out to replace it anyway.

If the resistor is known to be bad, how will knowing it's impedence today be of value?

I would be curious how it is known to be the bad component.

Can a Torch Light really be worth all the trouble? If you are just doing this for GP, then you could try the OEM, they may even have the info on the web?

Humm..... After working with Scott's, Polls, etc for the past few years I quickly figured it was a Flashlight ....

Some we purchase on the rigs are quite expensive, but when you figure in the price you pay in man hours that could be better spent on maintenance of truly critical equipment, I say trash the (flash light) and by a new one.

If its a game I'm truely lost and way out of my league

Part of the value of the bands of color is that it helps identify the part. Some capacitors, varistors, etc. can look very much like a resistor.

If you are looking at surface mount resistors, there is no color code but there is a numerical code.

Also note that resistors are passive components. If you are having to replace them, then something is really wrong with the design. Perhaps you would explain your problem a little more?
