Looking for Plastic Tubing

04/29/2007 12:43 PM

I'm looking for plastic tubing (or compound material), 1/4" od, 1/8" id which must be as flexible as a strand of cooked spagetti and must be low cost (latex rubber is too expensive). Name of material? US Suppliers? Any suggestions? Thanks

Is there an operating pressure? What will be flowing the tubing, air, water, acid.....? Will it be exposed to sunlight (UV)? Finally what is your maximum allowable cost per foot or total cost?

VERY low pressure. liquid flowing thru similar to cleaning detergents, nothing corrosive or acid, no exposure to sunlight and cost around $.50/foot in 100 foot rolls. Thanks for your response

Check out McMaster-Carr company Item Number 5236K11. It is silicone tubing and is $0.45/ft for quantities of 100 ft or more.

That sounds good, Mike. Do you know if it is as flexible as I described??

Max,

I don't know for sure, but the silicone that I have worked with before is similar in flexibility to latex. If your dimensions will allow it, maybe you could increase the flexibility by reducing the wall thickness. However, if you are using for peristaltic pumping, be careful because decreasing the wall thickness could decrease the durability and cause failure.

Just some thoughts.

Mike

5229K54 is another McMaster-Carr part number for about 0.23/foot in 50 foot rolls. This has is in the 'Shore A' range of 30-40, ruber is about 30-40.

Soft PVC is also good.

You can also try wwGraineger supply company. Local hose company will have it as well.

I don't believe you'll be able to find any type of tubing that will have a bend radius less than its diameter without some major restriction of flow; the inside of the bend requires the material to "flow" out of the way and the tube will begin to flatten perpendicular to the bend and restrict the ID. Basically a pinch.

The other responses, with part numbers, led me to purchase the soft tubing which I believe will work out for me. The tubing with a 1/4" bend radius is satisfactory. Thanks to you and everyone else who answered my inquiry. Max
