I found this video that does a surprising comparison of the relative amounts of energy released in some well-known earthquakes. One full step on the 'Richter Scale' is equivalent to a factor of about 31.6 in intensity; two full steps is a factor of 1000.
The video begins with the rather small 5.8 magnitude quake that struck Virginia, in the U.S., earlier this year. (A magnitude 3 quake would be about 1/16000th the intensity of the VA quake.)
