Electrostatic Dissipative (ESD) Label

12/13/2011 8:45 PM

Hi all,

Recently,I am taking care of a project that requires an ESD label in electronic industry. A label construction consists of a polymeric facesheet, adhesive layer and a liner. How do I make the label an ESD property? I believe polymeric facesheet will be tough to achieve ESD. As for adhesive, I think it can be done so long the formulation is the right one. As for the liner, probably not so easy to achieve too.

So I would like to see everyone opinion and knowledge to guide me thru the right path. Thank you.

Maimuki

Are you worried about ESD during label application?

After the label is applied, everything will be at the same potential so there isn't any discharge.

What's the environment?

Could you provide more information on your application, are you trying to create a label with a conductive surface or just an ESD symbol label.

Additionally what is the function of the label, is it covering a touchscreen, standard screen, does it need to include tactile pushbuttons, etc?

Are you concerned with its application during the assembly process causing ESD related damage to components or ESD related damagewhen the equipment is in the field and being used?

What is the equipment and what industry is it going to be used in? Do you have a standard you are trying to build to?

Normally the ESD label is applied "outside" the zone that is of concern so that people know before they open the item that it requires appropriate handling etc.

If the label is to be installed in an ESD sensitive environment, then the fact that it's an insulator should be OK. FR4 circuit board material is an insulator, the chip packages are all insulators, the harness connector bodies are all insulators.

Check with the end customer as to how and where they will be using the labels.

Is ESD related to humidity?. In tropical countries is its effect negligible?. In material handling applications related to grains, pellets or powders what are the recommended preventive or remedial measures.

I'm wondering if the OP has a firm grasp of what ESD and how to prevent it.

I don't get it.

Why not just buy an industry standard ESD safe ESD label?

Here is just one of many companies that make/sell them like this link.

This way the manufacture of the label is the one that can assure compliance.

Agreed, this is the easiest way. Custom printing is also available
