Need to be a little more specific...

On a drum this is LEBUS groves, OR are you talking about somthing else all together????

There are maximum wear guides that are often used to check sheaves. They look much like feeler guages, but are marked for specific wire rope sizes.

You should be using roller guide for wire rope....

Are you refering to Rope Guide fitted with Wire Rope Hoists?. If yes then profile will be similar to rope drum as specified in I.S:3938 but instead of groves it will have projections so that rope guide grips the empty grooves of the rope drum. It will guide the the rope during winding/unwinding on the drum.

Typically the "projections" you are referring to are there due to wear and are a good indication that its time to replace the lebus groves.

You should have grooves smooth, and of the correct profile for your cable being used PERIOD.

If in fact we are all on the same page as the information Lyn gave, there are also (in most cases) kick plates and wear plates on each side of the drum that need to be monitored as well.
