I can't find the exact type, but I believe it's a kit car that's been built on a VW Bug chassis.

It could be a real 50s or 60s era MG convertable, but the wheel base looks too short.

Being seen around the Malecon in Havana, I never thought Kitcar.

It does seem to fit the wheel base and even the fenders look Beetleish.

Thanks

Yeah looks like an MG...But this picture is taken in Cuba so more likely it's a VW bug customized..

Look at the windshield surround. It's much thicker, and painted on the mystery car.

An old Ford Anglia, circuit 1948?

I see some similarities.

No, the picture is of our "little house on the prairie" in SW Minnesota.

We're high and dry in the desert. At least till spring.

It is clearly not an MG, or any of the others mentioned. I am familiar with many cars of this type, but don´t recognize this one at all. I suspect that Kramarat is probably right, a kit car, although looking at the front end, probably not based on the VW Bug.

It's one of these:

The hood side louvers, the oddly shaped windshield and the rumble seat are giveaways. They both seem to be using the same mirror mounts which I am sure are not period.

In the US, this would have been called a 1935, I'd think -- the grill in 1937 was quite different. But if you follow this link, you see a 1935, which is very similar except for the windshield surround. I'd guess that both of these cars may have been converted from coupes to roadsters. There was a cabriolet model that has a an integrated windshield frame, but even it was not so heavy looking at the top as either the cream or yellow cars.

Awesome, I wonder what the drive train is?

Those Cuban Mechanics really can innovate.

I'd think in both cases (the cream/maroon one was in Havana) the drivetrain is likely to have a lot of original stuff, but with loads of evolutionary changes. As you say, they can keep things going, and going, and going.

Chances are that one has the original V8 flathead block, and the other has something that would completely surprise you -- a tractor engine, a VW beetle engine installed in the front, but driving the rear wheels. In the US, these would be been effectively thrown out by 1948... 63 years ago.

The Roadster seems to have a chrome windshield frame, whereas the Cabriolet has the painted frame...

I'd have to agree with K_Fry. Interestingly enough, zooming on the image of the cream colored car you can see 'Ford 1937' on the windshield.

I noticed the windshield wording too. I wonder if maybe in Cuba, older models were sold as newer. Or maybe there was just some confusion on the part of the person who labeled the windshield. Or maybe the car was title in the US first, and then in Cuba. and the date was from the first titling in Cuba.

Sheeesh, I should get it together to get some shots of it. The YouTube video of it on the road, put up by a stranger, has been taken down.

You have probably seen Josh's interview. I'm the old mumbly guy, Josh is the seasoned interviewer.

Those cars are gorgeous!:) Actualy I also love vintage cars but recently I came across Sonic RS and I was really amazed. The Detroit Auto Show is getting a peek at the Sonic RS, the sport-tuned model of the Sonic RS subcompact. The Sonic is the replacement for the Aveo and it was released this fall. Resource for this article: Chevrolet announces Sonic RS

I seen my first online ad for the Sonic last week and it an awesome looking machine.

As I see the world becoming a gentler and happier place, I sure hope that the manufacturers continue building attractive and well designed cars for sale in the USA.

The American Auto Manufacturers offerings in Australia for example have put Detroit Iron to shame.
