Cold Weather Hydraulic Leak

12/18/2011 3:30 PM

DEAR SIRS,

WE HAVE A BA43MD-R-000 BRAKE ASSEMBLY ON OUR MOORING PLATFORM FOR OUR AEROSTAT HERE IN AFGHANISTAN.IT LEAKS ABOUT 2 PINTS OF OIL UNDER PRESSURE, NOT STATIC. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS WAS NORMAL DUE TO THE COLD WEATHER. I AM NEW TO THE SITE, AND THE ASSEMBY IS ONLY 1 YEAR OLD.IT DID NOT LEAK LAST COLD SEASON. DOES NOT SEEM NORMAL TO ME, PLEASE ADVISE.

THANKS LAGMAN

First of all let me be the first of many to ask that you kindly turn your CAPS off.

No oil leak is "normal" and should be addressed, first we need to get a little deeper into specifics of your equipment. Exactly where is the oil leaking from, if you can identify this, then you will have most of the answer you are looking for. Can you offer a schematic of the system, normal operating pressures, etc.?

It's very difficult to find any info on this brake assembly, the numbers you quote are military, and not freely accessible...Through a generic search of these brakes for aerostats, there was some question on the design of some, but was deemed workable(seems to be a problem at the top and bottom of 'reel in' due to excessive stress)...If this is the case the seal may experience accelerated wear under heavy usage...I would have a replacement seal assembly on hand, and monitor rate of leak...Procure any diagrams and parts lists available for seal replacement...Contact the manufacturer for info on expected life span of seals..Check with any other operators using the same equipment for any info they might have on maintenance procedures...

Get back to the manufacturer of this equipment. Only, turn off Caps Lock first, please.
